Psychology in Schools

Secure Start® has a long history of psychological service provision to schools and in schools, spanning a decade. Principal Clinical Psychologist, Colby Pearce, has visited dozens of Independent, Catholic and State schools in metropolitan and regional South Australia, providing individual and small group consultations and informative presentations to whole of school staff on such topics as:

  • Effective care and management in the school setting of children who have experienced the devastating effects of abuse, neglect, family violence and loss;
  • Individual and classroom approaches to facilitating academic success;
  • Individual and whole of school approaches to engaging hard to reach children;
  • Individual and whole of school approaches to managing conduct-disordered children;
  • Individual and whole of school approaches to promoting student wellness, wellbeing and resilience.

Colby has trained school staff in individual, play therapy methods aimed at promoting engagement, wellness and wellbeing among the most vulnerable members of a school community.

Colby has been engaged as a consultant to both metropolitan and regional schools to assist school leadership address the complex presentations of the most resource demanding children and families.

Across the last the last five years Colby has provided an in-school psychology service to several schools in the outer northern suburbs of Adelaide. Secure Start associate, Louis van der Berg, provides an in-school psychology service to an outer north-eastern school.

Resilience Colby PearceColby’s expertise regarding the therapeutic care and management of children in the education setting is reflected in his publications in international education and educational psychology periodicals and two books; including A Short Introduction to Promoting Resilience in Children (London: Jessica Kingsley, 2011).  Colby has also been engaged by the Northern District Office and the Australian Guidance and Counselling Association – SA to provide professional development workshops to teachers and education professionals regarding the promotion of wellness, wellbeing and resilience in school settings.

Across a career spanning almost twenty years, Colby has  conducted assessments and prepared reports in relation to nearly 1000 children, including several hundred cognitive and educational assessments.
